WFP Launches Lifesaving Commodity Voucher Programme in Namibia

OKAUVA, NAMIBIA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), with the backing of the Government of Japan, has launched a groundbreaking Commodity Voucher Programme aimed at addressing urgent food security challenges in Namibia.

The initiative, officially inaugurated at Okauva Village in the Ohangwena region, is funded through a generous US$500,000 (N$9 million) contribution from Japan.

Targeting 27,000 vulnerable individuals in the drought-stricken Ohangwena and Kunene regions, the programme provides food vouchers redeemable at local retailers.

This approach ensures both immediate access to critical nutrition and support for the local economy.

Speaking at the launch, Ericah Shafudah, WFP Deputy Country Director in Namibia, emphasised the importance of the initiative. “The partnership with Japan is critical in preventing the escalation of malnutrition and ensuring that families do not resort to harmful coping strategies that would hinder long-term recovery from the drought,” she said.

Namibia’s agriculture-dependent communities have been severely affected by an El Niño-induced drought, exacerbating food insecurity, malnutrition, and poverty. Vulnerable households, particularly those headed by women, children, and the elderly, have borne the brunt of the crisis.

Hon. Rtd. Lt Gen Sebastian Ndeitunga, Governor of the Ohangwena region, underscored the urgency of the situation. “This support is coming at an opportune time where the resources available are vastly outpaced by population needs. Many impoverished households are failing to meet their food and nutrient requirements, heightening the need for urgent assistance.”

The programme is set to make a significant impact by enhancing household purchasing power, improving dietary diversity, reducing malnutrition among children under five, and stimulating local economic activity.

H.E. Hisao Nishimaki, Japan’s Ambassador to Namibia, reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting Namibia’s resilience efforts. “With the funding from the Government of Japan, this programme will bridge critical funding gaps, save lives, and contribute to Namibia’s progress toward sustainable recovery and resilience in the face of prolonged climatic shocks,” he said.

WFP has partnered with the Namibian government and Japan to align with national drought relief efforts, marking a vital step in addressing the country’s climate-induced challenges.

This initiative reflects WFP’s and Japan’s dedication to ensuring no one is left behind in Namibia’s journey toward food security and resilience.

The Commodity Voucher Programme is expected to serve as a model for future collaborations, demonstrating the power of international partnerships in addressing the intertwined challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and economic recovery.
